The Art and Science of LBL
For those of you who were unable to attend the inaugural TNI World Conference, the centerpiece of that amazing week was an event called “The Art & Science of LBL.” That event was truly a group effort because every single attendee became absorbed in it.
I got the basic idea for the A&S from something Michael Newton consistently shared during the wrap-up phase of each class that he taught. Specifically, he always told the new students that they would eventually enjoy a comfortable level of mastery over the techniques he had taught them, but that such mastery might only come after they conduct many sessions. Then he went on to predict that we each would, after perhaps years of practice, gradually bring our own personal style and technique to the work. He suggested that these personal enhancements would transform our work into something more akin to an art form. As I pondered his prediction, I realized that any evolution of our work toward an art form will have taken place so gradually and so subtly that we might not even recognize it after all these years. I realized that an investigation of this topic would require some real expertise. And fortunately TNI’s members are the world’s leading experts on LBL facilitation.
So our members at the inaugural World Conference explored Michael’s prediction and found it to be amazingly accurate. The first thing the members did was divide their knowledge of LBL practice into a list of broad topics. Then they broke into groups, according to personal interest, and went to work. Then the groups reported back to the whole to further brainstorm and organize the material. We did this twice – once for the Art of LBL and then for the Science of LBL. The “Science” portion of this process was meant to help us open up new trends and ideas that are taking us beyond Michael’s work because we realized that we are, in fact, responsible for continuing his research as he would have done himself were human life not so brief.
From the beginning, it has been my intention that we would present the A&S ideas and concepts to you, our members, as a part of TNI’s Continuing Education function. I hope you will take some time with this valuable material and trust that you will gain some useful inspiration from it. If a single brief conceptual statement here can have a beneficial effect for you and your clients, then it has been worth all the shared effort. And of course you can come back here again and again.
